Your reading habits are yours. We do not sell your information, use it to target ads at you, or check whether you open or click our emails.

Read freely

You do not need to share your email to read the site. We use Vercel Web Analytics to count visits and see which pages people read, where visits come from, and roughly which countries readers are in. It also shows which browsers and devices people use. It does not use tracking cookies or follow you to other websites. The information used to tell visitors apart lasts no longer than 24 hours. We do not connect visits to your email address or count visits to subscription confirmation and unsubscribe pages. If your browser asks websites not to track you, we respect that request. Links to other publications take you to sites with their own privacy rules.

Your email

If you subscribe, we use your email to send the free digest Monday through Friday, confirm your sign-up, and help with your subscription. We protect stored email addresses with encryption. You can unsubscribe using the link in any email. We remember that choice so we do not email you again.

On your device

Your browser remembers whether you have subscribed for up to 30 days, so we can show the right sign-up options. This does not record what you read. Clearing your browser data does not unsubscribe you from email. If you arrive through one of our ads, the browser remembers which ad for up to 24 hours. If you then subscribe and confirm, we save that information with your subscription to see which ads bring in readers. We do not share it with advertising companies.

Keeping get merge running

Other companies help us run the website, send emails and keep the site safe. They receive the information needed to do that work, such as your email address to deliver the newsletter. To block spam and automated abuse, our security provider also checks your internet address (IP address) and browser details. These companies may keep records of their work and security checks. What we keep

Temporary sign-up details are deleted 35 days after their last update. Security checks are kept for three days after their last update, and reports of emails that could not be delivered for up to 14 days. Your email, chosen language, sign-up confirmation and past email deliveries are not automatically deleted when you unsubscribe. We keep these details to manage subscriptions and avoid sending unwanted email. You can ask us to delete your details. We will still remember that you asked not to receive email. Some copies may remain in backups until those copies expire or are deleted.
