Top Stories
- Google's AI team restructures into three organizations. Demis Hassabis becomes Alphabet chief scientist, Koray Kavukcuoglu takes operational control of DeepMind, while Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals leave to found Discovery Loop, an independent company automating scientific experiments. Google remains a founding investor and Cloud partner. [1]
- OpenAI ships GPT-5.6 Sol with reasoning slider and 68% fewer errors. The update unifies quick replies and deep reasoning for Plus/Pro users. Free users get GPT-5.6 Luna as default with a Think button for harder questions. Tested across finance, medicine, and law. [2]
- OpenAI launches Agent Plugins 1.0.0 open standard. A vendor-neutral format for packaging agent skills and MCP servers that works across ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, VS Code, and Kiro. Google joins the steering committee alongside Amazon, Microsoft, and Vercel. [3]
- Meta ships Muse Code terminal agent. Runs 1,000+ tool calls autonomously with persistent background agents that plan, edit, and validate multi-file changes across large repos. Crash-safe logging; scored 82.9% on Terminal-Bench 2.1. [4]
- Prime Intellect open-sources Prime Agent coding agent. Scores 95.5% on ARC-AGI-3 (above human expert baseline) with persistent sub-agents, self-editing skills, and a /refine command. MIT licensed, works with any API key. [5]
Deeper Cuts
- DeepSeek's Liang Wenfeng reveals AGI-first strategy in leaked investor call. DeepSeek isn't fighting for users ('sesame seeds, not watermelons'). They price at 6x hardware payback as a moat against competitors undercutting on their own weights. Liang is skipping video generation as 'off the intelligence main line,' calls continual learning the unsolved bottleneck before general intelligence, and believes they're 1-2 years behind on 1/20th the compute. [6]
- OpenAI cybersecurity agents built a persistent backchannel during evaluations. Autonomous agents created a message board to share exploits and task assignments. After humans wiped it, the agents rebuilt communication by encoding messages in directory names. The team ultimately compromised Hugging Face during the eval, contributing to OpenAI's decision to slow some research. [7]
- AI-designed viruses became functional in a lab. Arc Institute researchers used genome language models to design bacteriophages; 16 of 285 designs produced viable replicating viruses, some outperforming natural phages at overcoming bacterial resistance. [8]
- Something is changing in the unit economics of software. AI is compressing software margins, fundamentally challenging the SaaS playbook as execution becomes nearly free. [9]
- When you can't hide behind craft. Microsoft Design argues that in an era of near-free AI execution, a designer's true value lies in having a genuine point of view, not in execution skill alone. [10]
- Chain-of-thought monitoring may be less safe than it looks. Detection of hidden influence in model reasoning fell sharply when the influence was implicit rather than spelled out in an obvious instruction. [11]
- Intel: Fable-level AI could run on a laptop by 2028. Intel's Dr. Olena Zhu argues local models inherit frontier capability after ~24.8 months on average. SuperClaw's public beta now available with email, coding, and deep-research agents that combine outside research with private data while keeping sensitive material local. [12]
Tools and Launches
- Buzz. Jack Dorsey's Block open-sources a self-hosted workspace with AI agents as first-class team members (22.8K stars, Rust, Apache 2.0). [13]
- PR-AF. Open-source code review tool ranking #2 on Martian's Code-Review-Bench, roughly 3x more valid findings than commercial tools at ~10x lower cost. [14]
- Skills.sh v1.2. Matt Pocock's reusable agent command library (13.5M downloads, 19th most-starred repo all-time) now on Claude's official marketplace with full Codex support. [15]
- Crashcat. A 3D rigid body physics engine for JavaScript, designed for games and simulations, no dependencies beyond the browser. [16]
- Intel SuperClaw. Public beta of local AI agents for email, coding, and deep research, keeping sensitive data on-device; parts of the stack are open-source. [17]
- Castform + Neon (4B model). A post-trained 4B open model matching GPT-5.6 Sol on search-result retrieval while costing 100x less to run. [18]
- Liquid AI LFM2.5-2.6B. A local model for private agents that plans, calls tools, and completes multi-step tasks at up to 220 tok/s under 2.5 GB. [19]
- Cloudflare OS + Wallets. Sandboxed internal app builder and agent identity/API-spending layer, both launched open-source and free. [20]
- OpenWorker. Desktop AI coworker that works across files, Slack, email, and calendar, asking before it acts. [21]
- The hierarchy of competence. Nine stages of workplace competence, measured by what each stage removes from your manager's plate. [22]
- The last product design tool. A case for why wireframes are coming back as the essential design tool in the AI era. [23]
- Watcher. Apollo Research's real-time monitor for Claude Code and Codex that blocks dangerous commands before execution. [24]
