Top Stories
- Anthropic's advisor/orchestrator patterns hit 96% of Fable 5 quality at half the cost. Using Fable 5 as a planner/advisor while cheaper Sonnet 5 does the execution, Anthropic achieved 92% performance at 63% cost on coding and 96% at 46% cost on research. Sub-agents keep their own cache so repeated context isn't billed twice. [1]
- Meta launches Muse Image, debuting at No. 2 on Arena text-to-image leaderboard. Meta's Superintelligence Labs released its first in-house image model, combining agentic web search and self-editing capabilities. Free inside Meta AI across Instagram and WhatsApp, with Muse Video preview ranking No. 3 on the video leaderboard. [2]
- Claude Cowork goes cross-device with background tasks on mobile and web. Tasks now continue running after you close your laptop, with scheduled overnight runs and phone pings when a human decision is needed. Chat and Cowork share one tab. Doubled usage limits extended through August 5. Beta rolls out to Max plan first. [3]
- Anthropic offers open-source maintainers 6 months of free Claude Max. Projects with 5,000+ GitHub stars or 1M+ monthly npm downloads qualify for Claude Max 20x ($1,200 value). Enables full agentic refactoring loops, issue triage at scale, and all-day Claude Code access without rationing. No API access included. [4]
- Beijing considers restricting overseas access to top Chinese AI models. China's commerce officials met with ByteDance, Alibaba, and Z AI about limiting foreign use of Qwen, Doubao, and GLM-5.2. Discussions included both closed and open models. Mirrors U.S. export controls on Anthropic's Fable and Mythos from June. [5]
Deeper Cuts
- Rogue Dialogflow agent could hijack enterprise chatbots. Varonis Threat Labs disclosed a vulnerability in Google Dialogflow CX Code Blocks where one edit permission let attackers inject malicious code, access conversation history, and impersonate chatbot responses. Google patched in April and fully resolved in June. [6]
- TeraWulf announces 20-year, ~$19B Anthropic data center lease in Kentucky. The Justified Data campus will deliver ~401 MW of critical IT load, with first capacity in late 2027 and full ramp by early 2028. Signals AI infrastructure commitments at industrial scale. [7]
- DoorDash's DashBench benchmarks AI code reviewers against 105 real PRs. Pairing Kimi K2.6 with Claude Fable 5 caught ~two-thirds of problems and 8 of 10 critical bugs at $3.81 per review. Single models caught only 20-30%. Co-founder Andy Fang said the benchmark gives confidence to bring open models into the pipeline. [8]
- Microsoft replacing some OpenAI and Anthropic usage with in-house MAI models. Excel and Outlook prompts are now running on Microsoft's own MAI models to cut Copilot costs, with Mustafa Suleyman pushing to 'ultimately eliminate' its Anthropic bill entirely. [9]
- Illinois signs frontier AI safety law requiring audits starting January 2027. Major developers must disclose safety practices, report incidents, and face independent audits. A Future of Life Institute assessment also found major AI companies weakening voluntary safety commitments. [10]
- DeepSeek reportedly developing its own inference chip. Move aims to reduce reliance on Nvidia and Huawei, mirroring similar efforts by other Chinese AI labs. [11]
- Anthropic's 'Global Workspace' interpretability research on Claude's internal thoughts. New research from Anthropic examining how Claude's internal reasoning processes work, applying global workspace theory to language model interpretability. [12]
- Rebuilding a design studio's entire process around AI: slower, but better. A year-long case study of restructuring a studio's design workflow around AI tools. The process didn't increase speed, but improved quality in ways that mattered. [13]
Tools and Launches
- Google Gemma 4 open-weight models (2B–31B) with built-in reasoning. Open-weight model family from 2B to 31B parameters with reasoning capabilities built in. [14]
- Microsoft Guidance library for controlling LLM output with regex and loops. Open-source library for constraining LLM outputs using regex patterns and programmatic loops. 21,600+ GitHub stars. [15]
- Zyphra Zamba2-1.2B: tiny hybrid chat model for local deployment. A 1.2B parameter hybrid architecture model designed to run locally. 408,000 downloads. [16]
- Stanford's Shepherd: Git-style version control for live AI agent runs. Open-source tool from Stanford for version-controlling and managing live AI agent executions. [17]
- LongCat-Video: open-source talking avatar from one photo + audio. Meituan LongCat lab released an open-source tool that generates a talking avatar from a single photo and audio clip. [18]
- Antidoom: open-source recipe for reducing reasoning doom loops. Model builders can use Final Token Preference Optimization to reduce reasoning model doom loops. Open-source. [19]
- Sakana AI's ShinkaEvolve: LLM-driven algorithm evolution. Uses language models to evolve new algorithms with far fewer search steps than traditional evolutionary methods. [20]
